Alva Landes

February 11, 1928 — July 10, 2020

Alva Daniel Landes, second son of Daniel and Rachel (Garber) Landes, was born February 11, 1928 near Englewood, Ohio. He peacefully departed this life on July 10, 2020, at the age of 92 years, 4 months, and 29 days.

Responding to the call of the Spirit, he yielded his life to our Lord and Savior, and was baptized into the Old German Baptist Brethren Church in May of 1947, remaining steadfast and faithful until death. As his health began to decline, he with his companion received the comfort of the anointing in the name of the Lord in the fall of 2018.

On April 24, 1949, he was united in marriage with Pauline E. Fisher of Covington, Ohio. This union was blessed with 3 sons and 3 daughters and together they enjoyed 71 years of marriage. They made their first home near Brookville, Ohio in the Wolf Creek district until 1952 when they moved to the Covington district to the farm of Pauline’s grandfather Emmanuel Mohler, where he lived the rest of his life engaged in farming and carpentry work. He, with his companion, was called by the church into the ministry of the Word on April 14, 1965, and ordained into the Eldership on January 12, 1974, faithfully fulfilling his duties as long as health permitted. Daddy and Mother enjoyed travelling throughout the brotherhood, visiting their children and fellowshipping with the church.

Preceding him in death are his parents; one daughter, Janet Hess; one granddaughter, Sarah Landes; two great-grandsons, Ivan Slothour and Will Slothour; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lela and Marvin Shoup, Bernice and Robert Boone; sister, Delma Swearingen; and sister-in-law, Ruth Landes. Also his father and mother-in-law, Lester and Elsie (Mohler) Fisher; brothers-in-law, Melvin Fisher and Paul (Pete) Garber; and sister-in-law, Eileen Boone.

Surviving with his companion are 3 sons and 2 daughters; Daryl (Rhonda), Bonita (Gerald) Flora, Areda (Daryl) Layman, Duane (Nancy), Bruce (Diane); son-in-law, Tim Hess, and daughter-in-law, Barb Landes. Also surviving is a brother, Dennis; brother-in-law, Richard Swearingen, sisters-in-law, Betsy Boone, Virginia Fisher, and Lois Garber; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Phyllis Boone, 15 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren as well as many nephews, nieces and friends.

“…Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”
